One of my favorite places in San Diego is the Cabrillo National Monument. My sons 3rd grade class took a field trip to Cabrillo this month and of course I had to tag along. The beautiful scenic drive was a great start to the day. We enjoyed an interesting video commemorating the landing of Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo at San Diego Bay on September 28, 1542.

The statue of Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo stands on a breathtaking overlook of the Pacific Ocean. "The visitor center offers an "Age of Exploration" exhibit, films, and ranger-guided programs about the history of Cabrillo." source nps.gov.

The Old Point Loma Lighthouse, a short walk from the visitors center, was completed in 1854 and in service until 1891. Enjoy the spiral staircase with the assistant keeper's quarter right next to the light house.
